Janyce Lastman, LL.B.

at The Tutor Group™

Janyce Lastman is an education consultant and case manager. She founded The Tutor Group in 1979 when her own tutoring practice became too busy to handle alone. Janyce still hires and supervises TTG's experienced and creative professional in-home tutors herself. TTG’s private tutors have diverse and extensive teaching, tutoring, talents and life experiences, and a shared passion for individualized, one-to-one work with students. Our tutors often say that working for TTG is unlike (and better than!) any other agency or private experience. As a result, some tutors have been with the company almost as long as Janyce has!

Janyce discovered long ago that her own learning style means she needs to do many different things, in order to do each one well. She began the consulting arm of her practice in 1985, advising students, parents and professionals on appropriate school placements and a wide variety of education matters. Her general education consultation and guidance services are ideal for typical, rising or highly successful students wanting advice on current issues and future education planning. She also regularly consults with relocating families eager to find the right school in their new community.

Janyce specializes in case management support for families of students considered at-risk, high risk or who have varied special needs. Since more challenged (or challenging!) students often need more than ordinary tutoring, TTG’s Mentor Tutors provide specialty services from life and social skills coaching and career planning to academic and study skills supports.

Janyce believes in “paying it forward” by giving back to the community and by educating others to become their own best advocates. Janyce has advised students, parents and professionals on appropriate school placements and a wide variety of education matters since 1985. Janyce is a former director of The Canadian Association of Toy Libraries and Parent Resource Centres. She co-founded and was Shows Coordinator for Schools Expo, an annual parent and professional education fair and symposium. In 1995, she co-founded the Canadian Hyperlexia Association, and remains current with a variety of special learning and developmental needs, including gifted education.

Janyce leads courses, seminars and workshops for parents, public interest groups and educators on a wide variety of topics, and has spoken on How to Choose a School alone over 100 times. She is the author of two books, numerous print articles, guides and curriculum packages, as well as on-line professional articles and book reviews.

Janyce is a lifelong learner, and regularly updates her own knowledge via webinars, professional conferences, courses, school visits and more recently, YouTube. Her law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School assists her involvement with education law matters and children's/parents' rights and responsibilities. However, as she does not practice law, she does not give legal advice. Janyce maintains a strong commitment to collaborative rather than adversarial solutions where children or young people are involved. To that end, she provides unbiased, factual professional education opinions and education-related recommendations for co-parents in high-conflict legal situations.

Janyce still sees select students individually for intensive remediation or enrichment, as well as for Test Tips and Hands-On Test Practice programs. Popular options include Wha...SSAT??!!?? (SSAT and private school entrance tests), plus support for PSAT/SAT, ACT, LSAT, MCAT, GMAT testing and related college/university applications. TTG’s specially trained Core (or content) Tutors also offer test prep supports under her supervision. Janyce teaches in-school mini-courses in Test Taking, Organization and Study Skills for Grades 4 - 10, and Life After 8 (or K, 6, 12 etc.) presentations for parents and teaching staff.
